Course Description
美國記者艾德加斯諾所翻譯與編選的故事集《活生生的中國》(Living China)於1937年出版,此後數個世代的譯者,例如王際真、卜立德(David E. Pollard)、杜邁可(Michael S. Duke)、葛浩文(Howard Goldblatt)、陶忘機(John Balcom)、林培瑞(Perry Link)與白睿文(Michael Berry)等等,也各自展開了多產的現代華語文學作品英譯生涯。本課程的主要目標是要探究來自兩岸三地的華語文學作品,包括小說、散文與現代詩等三種文類是如何被翻譯與編選進入選集的。許多會提出來討論的案例包括:張愛玲、白先勇、陳若曦如何翻譯自己的小說作品?白先勇的〈冬夜〉,包括他自己翻譯的在內,總共有三個譯本,各自有何不同?翻譯家,例如葛浩文,如何處理方言的翻譯問題?某些翻譯家,像是陶忘機,同時可以翻譯小說與詩歌,他們又是怎樣辦到的?其翻譯理念為何?希望這些問題都可以透過此一課程找到初步的暫時性答案。
Living China, the Chinese story collection translated and anthologized by Edgar Snow, was publish in 1937, and, since its publication, several generations of translators, such as Wang Chi-chen [王際真], David E. Pollard, Michael S. Duke, Howard Goldblatt, John Balcom, Perry Link , and Michael Berry, etc., have worked on translating works of Sinophone literatures into English, each with a prolific output. This course aims at exploring how different genres of modern Sinophone literatures from Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong have been translated and anthologized. And many of the intriguing cases will be discussed during classes. For example, how did Chang Eileen [張愛玲], Pai Hsien-yung [白先勇], and Chen Jo-hsi [陳若曦] translate their own works into Chinese? How did three translators, including the author himself, translate Pai’s story “Winter Nights” [〈冬夜〉] into three different versions? How do translators, such as Goldblatt, deal with the problems related to translating dialects? How can some translators, like John Balcom, translate both poems and works of fiction? How do they view translation as an act of literary creation? Hopefully, some preliminary and tentative answers to these questions can be found during in-class discussions.

II. 學習最重要的文學翻譯技巧。
III. 體認中譯英過程的豐富可能性。
IV. 探索不同譯者特有的不同翻譯觀。
This course is designed to achieve the following four objectives:
I. Understanding the translation history of modern Sinophone literatures.
II. Learning some of the most important techniques for literary translation.
III. Acknowledging the abundant possibilities of Chinese-English translation.
IV. Exploring different translators’ personal views of translation practice. 
課程要求
Requirements:
I. 閱讀每週之指定文本。
II. 針對文本提出問題,並進行討論。
III. 提出口頭報告與書面報告。
IV. 完成指定之翻譯作業。
V. 於期中考週提出學期報告大綱,期末考週繳交學期報告。
I. Finish assigned readings on a weekly basis.
II. Propose questions and engage in discussions on the basis of the assigned readings.
III. Make oral presentations and submit written reports.
IV. Translate the assigned texts.
V. The outline of semester paper and the completed paper should be submitted in the midterm and final exam weeks respectively.
